First Haircut

Dear Baby Bird,

Tonight while I was making dinner, you and Daddy disappeared, and when you came back I barely recognized you!

Daddy gave you your first haircut. You're still you, but you look so much older.

Market Bounty

Dear Baby Bird,
Today we had a great adventure! I pulled you and brother in the Burley behind my bike...all the way to the Farmer's market.
We put the stroller in the back for when we got there, and you both loved walking around, seeing people, tasting food, and enjoying the surprisingly cold day (it didn't even get to 60 degrees, in July!)

You especially liked eating the delicious dinner we made with veggies from our garden and the farmer's market (plus a few herbs from the neighbors). Yum!

You are a really happy little man, and today I put you in one of my favorite pairs of Brother's shoes. They fit perfectly, so hopefully you can get some use out of them on the cooler days.
One of your new favorite activities is opening the bench and taking out your shoes. Especially if you want to go outside (then you try to put them on, or bring them over to us) but also just for fun and to make a mess.
 Love,
Mom

Stroll(er)in'

Dear Baby Bird,

We had a very busy weekend! You spend a lot of time in your stroller, but you don't seem to mind, as long as there are things to see, people to notice, and sounds to hear.

On Friday we went to the Waukesha County Fair and you enjoyed looking at the farm animals, drinking milk, meeting Dad's co-worker and family, and hearing music.

On Saturday we went to the zoo with Dad's best man and his family. More animals, plus a playground and friends. Loads of fun!  Lots of giggling at the goats & cows.  Thankfully they shared some milk & ice cream with us to keep us cool.

On Sunday we went to visit Nana for her birthday, and she took us to Goebbert's, where Brother got to do some mining for gems. You enjoyed the playground and flowers.

Bastille Day

Dear Baby Bird,

Happy Bastille Day!  We went to downtown Milwaukee to celebrate the French independence holiday.  I think everyday you are celebrating your independence -- you really like to walk around now.

We enjoyed listening to French music, seeing French entertainment, and eating some French food (escargot, beignets, and crepes).

Love,
Daddy

Cousin Birthday Party

Dear Baby Bird,

Today, many of your cousins came to party and celebrate your 1st birthday!  You were especially giggly today in your "I'm 1" firecracker shirt (with cape).

Daddy helped you open your presents.  You sure enjoyed every present!

And you loved it when everyone sang Happy Birthday and clapped.  You clapped too.

Special visitors came all the way from Florida!  Your cousin was in Illinois for a volleyball tournament.  She sure is getting tall!

And the nice warm weather brought everyone out to dip their toes in your pool.

Water games, water toys, what more could you ask for?

And best of all, your Nana spent some time chasing you around the house.

Love,
Daddy

Birthday Brunch

Dear Baby Bird,
It was a hot day today, so Grandma suggested we meet at a park near the lake. There is a saying here that it's "cooler near the lake" and today that was true! We found a park with shade and a playground, and we had a great time!

You were so proud to sit in the "big people" chairs for a snack
Despite your expression here, you loved the chocolate cupcake. You had some help eating the rest of it. ;)
Grandma brought bubbles and you enjoyed watching them, then wanted to figure out how to make your own.
With you safely dry in your stroller, the rest of us used water squirters to get each other wet. We were supposed to be playing a game where we aimed the water at a target, but it was much more fun to aim at each other.
It was a great way to spend your birthday morning.

Mom

12 months old

Dear Baby Bird,

Likes
Searching the living room for any remote control clicker that got left within your reach. You love to walk around holding them triumphantly!
Playing with doors. Your latest game with brother involves him hiding behind the closet door, and the two of you laugh really hard when you find him.
Walking/running, especially on concrete.
Cuddling in the rocking chair before nap or bed. We're enjoying this one while it lasts.
The pool, playgrounds, our yard.. anything outside where you can run around and explore.

Dislikes
Not getting your way, having something taken away from you, or being told no. You have a very convincing cry when these things happen.
Having your diaper changed.

Mom

Who you've become

Dear Baby Bird,
Tomorrow is your birthday. It is so amazing to me how quickly this year has gone by, and how much you have grown and changed and learned in that year.

You are learning new things every day (today you learned to cover your eyes for peek-a-boo) and it's easy to forget your personality at certain stages along the way. So I want to take a snapshot of you today, a boy about to turn 1. I'll never be able to capture it all, but here's a few things Daddy captured on photo today.

You love interacting with people, and always have a lot to say!

You like to find ceiling fans and spin your hands to point them out. Lately you do this for anything on the ceiling, including the lights.
You have some crazy hair right now! I know a haircut will be in your future but right now I'm enjoying all the styles you get when you eat (and thus rub your hands and food on your head) or are in the wind.
You like to blow bubbles and will probably make a great trumpet player someday!
You love to walk around holding things in your hands. When you walk around waving two flags, it's like a parade in our house.
You really, really love your Brother. You know his favorite stuffed animal, and you want to be wherever he is, doing whatever he is.

Tomorrow is the big day. I know there won't be much change between today and tomorrow. But the change from a year ago, when I sat rocking in your empty nursery, holding my belly, wondering what kind of blessings you were going to bring us... well that change has been an amazing gift, so much more than I could have dreamt of or asked for or imagined. And I can't wait for the next year, and the year after that, to continue to get to be your mom.

Mom

4th of July... part two

Dear Baby Bird,

This afternoon we had a small birthday party for you. Grandma and Grandpa, Aunt Karina and Uncle Jake, and your neighbor friends Sam and Zach all came to celebrate your first birthday.

You got to have your own special dessert. We took you outside because we figured you'd want to make a mess... and we were right!

Yup, dining by the pool was the right choice!

Love,
Mom

4th of July... part 1

Dear Baby Bird,

Today is a National Holiday, but it's also really close to your birthday, so we're making the whole weekend into a celebration!

This morning we went to a parade. You liked waving at people and floats as they passed by.

Aunt Karina and Uncle Jake were here when you woke up from your nap. You got to play with balloons, and you LOVED it!

We're also working on drinking water from a cup... you do well at first but then drink and forget to swallow and end up spitting a lot out. So your shirts are usually pretty soaked. But you're happy! :)

You laughed so much when balloons would bounce off of your head

What a joy you are to be around.

 Love,
Mom
